If you have read Bertrand R. Brinley's The Mad Scientists' Club, The New Adventures of the Mad Scientists' Club will be familiar. It contains five more stories about the Mad Scientists' Club, to wit,

The Telltale Transmitter
The Cool Cavern
Big Chief Rainmaker
The Flying Sorcerer
The Great Confrontation

These vary in quality, but on the average they are not, in my opinion, as good as those in the first book. I enjoyed the first, "The Telltale Transmitter" quite a lot, but the rest seemed to be straining too hard to be zany and quirky, to the extent of occasionally betraying the boys' characters.

All Systems Red Martha Wells ** spoiler alert ** I'm sorry, but I cannot do it. I can't refer to Murderbot as "it". I know that's the pronoun she and her colleagues use throughout the book, but as a native English speaker d'un certain âge , I can't help but see "it" as the impersonal pronoun, the pronoun used for things that are things, not persons. And THE WHOLE ENTIRE POINT of All Systems Red is that Murderbot is a person. I could tolerate "they", since, although it is grammatically impersonal, there is long English language tradition of using "they" for a person. But not "it". So, hoping that I don't offend anyone by misungendering our protagonist, I will call her "her" in this review. All Systems Red has two linked plots. Both revolve around mysteries. The obvious one, which I will call Plot One, is hinted at by the last sentence of the publisher's blurb: But when a neighboring mission goes...

Claudius the God Robert Graves Robert Graves 's I, Claudius introduced Claudius, the man who would become Rome's fourth emperor. He was underestimated because of his lameness and his stutter, called "Claudius the Idiot" by his family and associates, as well as other unsavory names. Claudius, as presented by Graves in that fictional autobiography, is an appealing figure. He is intelligent, humble, and (by the admittedly low standards of the time) humane. He genuinely wants to restore the Roman Republic. I, Claudius ends with Claudius being elevated to Emperor. He is genuinely unhappy about this, but accedes to prevent bloodshed and disaster. In Claudius the God he finds, tragically, that Empire is a trap he cannot escape. It is never possible to set aside the burden without causing even greater disaster. Die Farbe der Rache Cornelia Funke I first listened to Cornelia Funke 's Inkworld trilogy (as it then was) beginning in 2004, and then as the audiobooks became available. They were among the very first audiobooks I ever listened to, and they were VERY good. The premise of the series is that some especially good narrators can, by reading a book aloud, read characters from the fictional world of the book into our own, and likewise read people from our world into the fictional world of the book. Versions of this idea are fairly common in fantasy fiction, and it's not hard to see why. If you are an avid reader, you feel that something like this happens when you read a good book: you enter into the book, and for a while you dwell in that fictional world. Aside from our own, the world in which most of the action of the Inkworld trilogy takes place is one created by a writer named Fenoglio in a fantasy novel called Inkheart . Eric Terry Pratchett As usual when I have just finished listening to one of Terry Pratchett 's Discworld books, I find myself trying to answer two questions: "Was there a plot? If so, what was it?" In the case of Eric , the original cover provides a clue: -- Eric is a Discworld version of Goethe 's Faust . And yeah, now that you point it out, I do kind of see the resemblance. But that's not what Eric is about really. To understand the purpose of Eric , you need to go back to Sourcery . In Sourcery the Discworld faced a grave danger from a Sourcerer, an immensely powerful Wizard. The Running Grave Robert Galbraith The first thing that struck me when I began Robert Galbraith 's (AKA J.K. Rowling 's) The Running Grave was how readable it was. Usually when I begin reading a new book I am conscious of some effort. No matter how good it may be, it feels a little like work to make my way into a new novel. But not when Rowling is the author! I was drawn in immediately. And I remained engaged right through to the end. It was not literally unputdownable, but it was pretty darn close. 960 pages, and I finished it in just over two days. What's more, I got up at 4:00 this morning, unable to sleep for wanting to know what came next. As always in a Cormoran Strike book, there are two plots. The Mimicking of Known Successes Malka Older I picked up The Mimicking of Known Successes because it is a finalist for the 2024 Best Novella Hugo. So, yeah. It looks like we finally managed to do it -- wipe out life on Earth. After decamping to Mars for a while and trashing that, too, we are now camped out on Jupiter. We hope one day to fix Earth and go back, but I'd say the real question is whether anything will be left of Jupiter when we're done with it. Over a hundred years have passed since the abandonment of Earth. These are the main political divisions of the Jupiter colony. One political movement, the Classicists, works towards fixing, repairing, and returning to Earth. Their main political opposition is the Moderns, whose main goal is to make life livable on Jupiter. Das Glasperlenspiel Hermann Hesse I read Hermann Hesse 's Das Glasperlenspiel in 1984. (In English the title Das Glasperlenspiel would be "The Glass Bead Game", but you may find English translations under the title Magister Ludi , which is Latin for "Master of the Game".) I was at the time spending a year in West Germany. (It was still a divided nation -- the Todesstreifen separating us from East Germany was only a few miles away from where I lived.) I had the equivalent of a year of college German at Stanford, and to improve my Deutsch I read books. Das Glasperlenspiel was easily the most difficult such book I read. The Fuller Memorandum Charles Stross, Gideon Emery (narrator) Those words are spoken by James Angleton in the course of Charles Stross ' The Fuller Memorandum . It's not a good sign! We have seen Angleton in both The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue (as well as the bonus novellas). His official title is DSS, which supposedly stands for "Detached Special Secretary", but the scuttlebutt among Laundry employees is that it really means "Deeply Scary Sorcerer". We know Angleton as the puppet-master who devises devious schemes to catch bad actors and pulls everyone's strings to make them come out as intended. We also know, from The Jennifer Morgue , that there is something uncanny about him. In that book we learned that in 1975 Angleton was a UK observer to a US intelligence project. On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything Nate Silver I have mixed feelings about Nate Silver ’s On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything , because it is a mixed kind of book. On the one hand, I find Silver ’s way of thinking: quantitative, probabilistic, epistemically humble, congenial. On the other, his need to make enemies is less congenial. The premise of On the Edge is that people who live by managing risks form a community, which Silver Calls “The River”. His definition of the River (“River: A geographical metaphor for the territory covered in this book, a sprawling ecosystem of like-minded, highly analytical, and competitive people that includes everything from poker to Wall Street to AI. The demonym is Riverian.”) is broad and vague, but that is not really a problem, because the book consists mostly of profiles of hundreds of Riverians — by the end, you have a clear idea of who (in Silver 's mind) the members are.
