A Traveler's Guide to Fantastic Countries
Seanan McGuire
A Traveler's Guide to Fantastic Countries is Seanan McGuire's April, 2024 Patreon reward. She introduces it as follows
(Image: An Australian pelican and two ducks. The pelican is very large. The ducks are not.)Happy April! Our story this month is about travel, and all the wonderful, horrible, terrible places it can take us. Enjoy!(Genre: fantasy, some creepiness, no horror.)
It's a brief (11 pages in PDF) alphabetical list of 26 imaginary countries (one for each letter of the alphabet), from Avalon to "The Lost City of Z" -- which is, apparently where a film I had never heard of takes place. It presents itself as sales literature for a travel agency that can arrange trips to these places.
McGuire has a degree in folklore from Berkeley, and it shows. It's a bit of fun.
I once owned an atlas of imaginary countries, not this one or this one -- it was much older than both of those, but I can't find it in an Internet search. (I probably still own it, but if so it is in storage and inaccessible to me.) This story-like object reminded me of it.
